TRURO, N.S. – A medical marijuana grow facility planned for Truro has received some major investment to help advance the project.
Evan Price, president of the Truro Herbal Company (THC) announced this week that it has received an investment of $1.2 million from four separate, private investors, one of whom is Chuck Rifici, co-founder Canopy Growth Corporation, (formerly Tweed Marijuana Inc.), a pioneer in the medical cannabis industry.
Rifici is no longer connected to Canopy Growth Corp., except as a shareholder.
“There are few people in Canada that have the experience and success Mr. (Chuck) Rifici brings to the table,” Price said, of the co-founder of Canopy Growth Corp.
Price said Rifici’s knowledge of challenges the THC will face as it moves forward will assist in completing the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purpose Regulations licensing process to help ensure a smooth and efficient move into the market.
Rifici said in a news release the THC could become the first licensed producer of medical marijuana in Nova Scotia.
“I know their diverse and talented team and they are well positioned in the Atlantic region to be successful and a sustained player in the medical cannabis industry,” he said.
Dr. John Gillis, former Chief Medical Advisor of Tweed, is currently the VP of Medical Development with The THC.
“I really appreciated working with Chuck (Rifici) a few years ago at Tweed and remain impressed with his ground-breaking and visionary work in this sector,” Gillis said.
“I am eager to work with him again to start meeting the needs of Atlantic Canadian patients and bring forward the quality and innovative products we have spent years developing.”
The THC, which has purchased property in the Truro Business Park, submitted its application to Health Canada in March 2014. The company continues advancing through the license review process and Price said construction of its state-of-the-art facility will begin as soon as it receives the Health Canada approval, which is expected in the next few months.
